Karin Haas
Biography
Karin Haas (b. 1986) lives and works in New York, NY. She holds a BFA in Printmaking from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) in Milwaukee, WI. Haas has exhibited in numerous spaces around the United States and abroad, including Jack Barrett Gallery, NY, Sargent's Daughters Gallery, NY, John Michael Kohler Art Center, Sheboygan, WI and in 2019 had a solo presentation titled The Shape of Things at OTOMYS Gallery and Hoxton Hotel, Shoreditch, London.
Karin Haas' practice centers on the medium of colored pencil and pastel on paper, cultivating a rigorous exploration of form and pattern through her synonymous stacked shapes. There is a captivating tension Haas creates between offering a sense of depth and weight to her drawn shapes while at the same time pulling our focus back to their surface through a fluid use of pattern and visible, repetitious mark-making. Meditative pencil strokes and soft areas of colored pigments caught on the thick texture of paper combine to offer a quiet but alluring materiality to her pieces.
