Zoe Dering
Biography
Zoe Dering began working with clay in 2008 and currently splits her time between ceramics and working as a professional pastry chef. These dual pursuits are in many ways connected; there is a science that must be adhered to before one can move on to finding freedom within either of the two mediums.
A constant pursuit of Dering's is the balance of form and function, and her work mines the point of convergence between artisan craft techniques and how we live in our modern lives. By creating pieces intended for every day use, she reinforces her belief that we should have a closer relationship to the essential qualities of every object we interact with during our lives. We should know how they are made and acknowledge the role they play in our personal and collective histories.
Zoe makes one-of-a-kind pieces according to evolving themes. She also regularly works on large-scale tableware design projects for restaurants around the US. To all of her work, Zoe brings an innate sense of tone and graphic balance, often juxtaposing vibrant colors with the organic speckled earthenware texture that hums below the surface like a musical baseline. She currently lives and works in Point Reyes, CA.
