This pair of silkscreen prints are based on two small painted works by Jonathan Ryan Storm. Known for his complex plays on color, form and pattern in his paintings, we selected one vibrantly multi-colored work and one zippy monochrome piece to realize through screenprint. The punchy colors and geometric op-art quality to these pieces are well suited to the graphic silkscreen printing process.

Rather than the traditional plain canvas or linen, often Storm will use sourced patterned fabrics as the ground for his paintings. During the stretching process these textiles are irregularly warped and pulled, creating a captivating sense of unease or imbalance that he can then respond to through additional painted applications.
Jonathan Ryan Storm (b. 1980, Phoenix, AZ) lives and works in Brattleboro, Vermont. He is a graduate in Metaphysics from Wheaton College (BA, 2003). Recent exhibitions have included Proper Headshrinker at David Shelton Gallery; Houston, TX and Communerism at Jaume Gallery; Greenfield, MA.

Storm’s work is about finding balance while solving a puzzle. As in the opening chess move, traps are laid where colors conflict with one another, where circles mirror each other and, in order to advance, some are sacrificed. Our typical framing practice is to float mount prints with 1-inch of space around the print. This is a method of framing that keeps the art fully visible in the frame and leaves the edges of the cotton papers exposed. A spacer is added to the frame to keep the artwork from touching the plexiglass. Float mounting requires adhering the print to an acid free foam core back or mat board using acid free linen tape.

UV-filtering plexiglass is used for all frames, an option that has become the industry standard. Plexiglass is lighter, scratch-resistant & shatter-resistant (essential for shipping). It also provides more UV protection and less glare than glass.

We’ve found that the best way to avoid damage, prints will arrive carefully packaged in sturdy tubes. A day or two under some heavy books and they'll be nice and flat. However, keep in mind that because of the nature of cotton paper, it will respond to differing levels of humidity in the air. Sometimes paper will lay flat and other times it will slightly ripple. This is natural and a lovely reminder of its physicality as an organic object, embrace its paper personality! If you’re planning to frame your print, just take them rolled up to your framer and they can expertly take care of the flattening process.
